The Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) in Bibiani, DSP Emmanuel Osei, has disclosed that the municipality has recorded 15 road accidents in recent months, fortunately without any loss of life.
Speaking in an interview, DSP Emmanuel Osei attributed the majority of the accidents to overspeeding, stressing that many drivers fail to comply with traffic regulations, particularly when entering populated areas.
According to him, road traffic laws require drivers to reduce their speed to 30 kilometres per hour when entering towns and communities. However, some motorists disregard this regulation and continue driving at excessive speeds, thereby increasing the risk of accidents.
"The major cause of the accidents we have recorded is overspeeding. Drivers are expected to reduce their speed when they enter towns, but many fail to obey this important rule," he stated.
DSP Osei also cautioned drivers against driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, noting that impaired driving significantly affects judgment, reaction time, and overall road safety.
He further advised motorists to ensure they possess valid driving licences and other necessary vehicle documents before taking to the roads. He emphasized that adherence to traffic laws and responsible driving practices are essential in preventing accidents and safeguarding lives.
The MTTD Commander called on all road users, including commercial and private drivers, to prioritize safety at all times and cooperate with law enforcement agencies in promoting accident-free roads within the Bibiani Municipality.
"Road safety is a shared responsibility. If drivers obey speed limits, avoid alcohol and drugs, and follow traffic regulations, we can significantly reduce accidents on our roads," DSP Emmanuel Osei added.
