Drivers Cautioned Against Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol and Illicit Drugs
The Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) in Bibiani, DSP Emmanuel Osei, has issued a strong warning to drivers against operating vehicles under the influence of alcohol and illicit drugs, describing the practice as one of the leading causes of road accidents.
According to DSP Osei, alcohol and drug abuse among drivers continue to pose a serious threat to road safety, as such substances impair judgment, reduce concentration, and slow reaction times. He explained that a driver under the influence is more likely to make poor decisions, fail to observe traffic regulations, and lose control of a vehicle, thereby endangering the lives of passengers, pedestrians, and other road users.
Speaking during a road safety awareness engagement, DSP Osei emphasized that responsible driving requires alertness, discipline, and full control of one's mental and physical abilities.
“Driving is a serious responsibility. Once a person consumes alcohol or takes illicit drugs before driving, his or her ability to react quickly to unexpected situations on the road becomes significantly impaired. This increases the risk of accidents and can lead to devastating consequences,” he stated.
The MTTD Commander also urged commercial drivers, private motorists, and motorcycle riders to prioritize safety by avoiding substances that could affect their ability to drive responsibly. He advised transport operators and vehicle owners to monitor their drivers and ensure they adhere to road safety regulations at all times.
DSP Osei further encouraged drivers to carry valid driving licences and all necessary vehicle documents whenever they are on the road. He noted that compliance with traffic laws is essential in maintaining order and reducing accidents within the municipality.
He called on all road users to support ongoing road safety campaigns and cooperate with law enforcement agencies in promoting safe driving practices.
“Road safety is a shared responsibility. Every driver has a duty to protect lives by obeying traffic regulations, respecting speed limits, and staying away from alcohol and drugs before getting behind the wheel,” DSP Emmanuel Osei stressed.
The MTTD has reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying public education and enforcing traffic laws to ensure safer roads across the Bibiani Municipality.
