Residents of Sefwi Ewiirekyiren, a farming community in the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipality of the Western North Region, are appealing to the government and other stakeholders to urgently provide them with basic social amenities to improve their living conditions.

According to the residents, the community continues to face serious developmental challenges, including the lack of a school, telecommunication network, toilet facility, and speed ramps on the road passing through the town.

Speaking to the media, some residents lamented that school children in the community are forced to walk several miles every day to Ntakam to access education because there is no school in the community.

They explained that during the rainy season, many children are unable to attend school due to the poor nature of the roads and long distance they have to travel.

The residents noted that the situation is negatively affecting education in the area, particularly for children from Kindergarten to Junior High School level.

According to them, the former Member of Parliament for the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Constituency, Hon. Alfred Obeng Boateng, popularly known as “Approaches,” visited the community and promised to construct a school block for them.

They stated that work on the project reportedly began, but the construction was halted after the 2024 general elections in which the former MP lost his seat.

Since then, the project has not continued, leaving the children without a proper place of learning.

“We are suffering because our children walk a very long distance before they can attend school at Ntakam. During the rainy season, they sometimes stay at home because the road becomes very bad,” one resident stated.

The residents also appealed for improved telecommunication network services in the area, explaining that the community currently struggles with poor or no network connectivity, making communication very difficult.

On sanitation, the residents admitted that although they are prepared to contribute towards the construction of a toilet facility themselves, they would need support in the form of roofing sheets and cement to complete the project.

Regarding water supply, they said the community already has access to water but requires additional support to complete the remaining works on the project.

The residents further appealed for the construction of speed ramps within the community to help reduce cases of speeding vehicles knocking down domestic animals and endangering lives.

The Chief of Sefwi Ewiirekyiren, Nana Kofi Mensah, also joined the appeal, stressing that residents of the community are equally Ghanaians and deserve their fair share of the national development agenda.

According to him, politicians often visit the community during election periods to campaign and seek votes, but little attention is given to the developmental needs of the people afterward.

“We are also Ghanaians and deserve our share of the national cake. Politicians come here during elections to seek our votes, but our children are still suffering without a school,” he lamented.

Nana Kofi Mensah questioned how children from the community could aspire to become future leaders, including Presidents, Members of Parliament, Municipal Chief Executives, and other important personalities if they are denied access to proper education.

“I need a school for my people. Just look at these little children walking long distances to Ntakam every day before they can attend school,” he added.

The chief therefore appealed to the government, philanthropists, non-governmental organizations, and corporate institutions to come to the aid of the community by supporting them with educational and social infrastructure to improve the welfare of residents.
