Zoomlion Ghana Commences Disinfection Exercise Across Public Spaces in Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai

Bibiani, Western North Region — Zoomlion Ghana Limited has commenced a disinfection, fumigation and disinfestation exercise across key public spaces in the Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai Municipality as part of efforts to improve sanitation and protect public health.

The exercise, which forms part of a nationwide programme by the company to disinfect public spaces, is targeting more than 30 public facilities within the municipality.

Among the facilities earmarked for the exercise are the Bibiani Central Market, public toilets, schools and lorry stations, as well as other areas that attract large numbers of people.

The initiative is expected to help reduce the spread of diseases, particularly those associated with poor sanitation, stagnant water and flooding during the rainy season.

Exercise to Prevent Disease Outbreaks

Speaking to Bibianinews.com, the Western North Regional Manager of Zoomlion Ghana, Mr. Richison Nii Ayi Reinorf, explained that the exercise is aimed at maintaining clean and hygienic public spaces while protecting the health of residents and the environment.

He noted that flooding could increase the risk of disease outbreaks because floodwaters can spread contaminants and create conditions favourable for the transmission of certain diseases.

“When floods happen, there are other diseases that come with them. For us to be able to control the outbreak of such diseases, we need to disinfect public places and areas where the flooding took place,” he said.

Mr. Reinorf said the disinfection exercise was therefore necessary to complement other sanitation and public health measures being undertaken in communities.

Residents Urged to Stop Dumping Waste in Gutters

The Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai Municipal Zoomlion Manager, Mr. Kyei Baffour, also called on residents to take personal responsibility for keeping their surroundings clean.

Speaking to the media during the fumigation, disinfection and disinfestation exercise in Bibiani, he urged residents to dispose of their household waste properly by using designated refuse containers instead of dumping rubbish into gutters.

He cautioned that indiscriminate disposal of waste could block drainage systems and create stagnant water, which could become breeding grounds for mosquitoes and increase the risk of malaria.

Mr. Kyei Baffour further warned that choked gutters could contribute to flooding, particularly during the rainy season, potentially putting lives and property at risk.

He stressed that while sanitation authorities and service providers could undertake regular cleaning and disinfection exercises, the cooperation of residents remained essential to achieving a clean and healthy environment.

Environmental Officer Calls for Change in Attitude

The Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai Municipal Environmental Officer, Mr. Kando Mattaw, also emphasised the need for residents to change their attitudes towards waste management.

He said the government commits significant resources to maintaining sanitation and ensuring a clean environment, adding that waste management comes at a considerable cost to the state.

According to him, government alone cannot shoulder the responsibility of keeping communities clean, and residents must play their part by adopting responsible waste disposal practices.

“Waste management is expensive and therefore government cannot do everything. We need the commitment of people to complement the efforts of government to keep the environment clean,” he added.

Mr. Mattaw therefore urged residents, traders, school authorities, transport operators and other stakeholders to support sanitation initiatives by keeping their surroundings clean and avoiding practices that could undermine efforts to improve environmental health.

The ongoing exercise is expected to cover several strategic locations across the Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai Municipality, with authorities urging residents to cooperate with the teams and maintain proper sanitation practices even after the exercise.

The stakeholders believe that sustained public cooperation, responsible waste disposal and regular sanitation interventions will be crucial in preventing disease outbreaks, reducing flooding risks and creating a healthier environment for residents.
