"We Are Resetting People’s Lives, Not Just the Economy” — Bibiani MCE

The Municipal Chief Executive for Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai, Hon. Sebastian Obeng, has emphasized that government interventions aimed at supporting persons with disabilities are not only about economic empowerment but also about transforming lives and creating opportunities for vulnerable members of society.

According to him, the support being provided to persons with disabilities is part of a broader effort to “reset people’s lives, not our economy alone,” by equipping beneficiaries with resources that can help them become productive, independent and financially empowered.

Hon. Sebastian Obeng made the remarks during the disbursement of livelihood support items to 80 persons with disabilities in the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipality.

The items distributed included refrigerators, laptop computers, fufu-pounding machines, block-making machines, knitting machines, financial assistance and other livelihood-support equipment intended to help beneficiaries establish or strengthen their businesses.

The MCE urged the beneficiaries to take proper care of the items and ensure that they are used for their intended purposes.

He particularly cautioned them against selling the items, stressing that the support was provided to improve their livelihoods and should therefore be treated as an investment in their future.

“We have many persons with disabilities in the municipality, and if you have been selected and have received some support, please take good care of it so that it will last longer,” Hon. Sebastian Obeng cautioned.

He explained that the number of persons living with disabilities in the municipality is significant, making it necessary for the Assembly to implement the distribution in batches so that more beneficiaries can eventually be reached.

Hon. Obeng therefore appealed to beneficiaries who have received the items to use them responsibly and ensure that the intervention achieves its intended purpose.

He noted that when the items are properly maintained and used productively, they can generate income, support families and enable beneficiaries to become more self-reliant.

The MCE further encouraged beneficiaries to see the intervention as an opportunity rather than merely receiving free items, urging them to work hard and turn the support into sustainable livelihoods.

He assured persons who are yet to benefit that the Assembly would continue with the programme in subsequent batches, subject to the availability of resources and the identification of eligible beneficiaries.

The initiative forms part of efforts by the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipal Assembly, through the Social Welfare and Community Development Department, to promote the inclusion, dignity and economic empowerment of persons with disabilities in the municipality.
