Seaman Slams Mahama Over Disappointing Cocoa Price; Demands Immediate Review
The Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Constituency Chairman of Patrons, Alhaji Ben Ali Seaman, has expressed strong dissatisfaction with the newly announced cocoa farmgate price by the NDC government, describing it as a betrayal of Ghanaian cocoa farmers.
Speaking to the media on August 5, 2025, Alhaji Seaman questioned the NDC's sincerity behind the GH¢3,228.75 per bag price, which he deemed "ridiculous, laughable, absurd, shameful, and grossly unfair."
He referenced President Mahama's earlier claim that cocoa farmers would be "very, very, very happy" with the new price, countering that the reality on the ground tells a different story. "Cocoa farmers are rather sad, disappointed, and feel betrayed," he said, adding that they deserve better for their hard work and sacrifices.
The chairman raised critical concerns about the NDC's failure to fulfill their promise of paying a minimum of GH¢6,000 per bag, which they had advocated for while in opposition.
He also questioned the quality of cocoa sacks made available by COCOBOD for the 2025/2026 crop season, asking if they were the same "over-procured" or "missing" sacks previously mentioned.
Alhaji Seaman urged the NDC to honor their campaign promises and called on Hon. Eric Opoku to apologize to cocoa farmers for his failed pledge. He also reminded Finance Minister Dr. Ato Forson to deliver on financial commitments made to farmers.
Expressing concern about the potential impact on the cocoa industry, he demanded an immediate review of the cocoa price to avoid pushing farmers into the hands of illegal mining operators.
In conclusion, he emphasized the need to safeguard the cocoa industry, protect farmers' livelihoods, and maintain Ghana's position on the global cocoa market. His parting remark, "If you cannot write, you cannot spell," underscored his disappointment with the government's handling of the issue.
