A staunch member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communications Team in the Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai Constituency, Charles Sam, has argued that Ghana continues to rely heavily on loans because the country’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, achieved political independence without securing economic freedom.

Speaking on Okyeame Radio’s “Adekyee mu Nsem” morning show, hosted by AkuapemHann, Charles Sam noted that successive governments—past and present—have depended largely on external borrowing for national survival and development.

According to him, Ghana still borrows to undertake almost every major project, despite initiatives such as former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s “Ghana Beyond Aid” agenda and other policies aimed at reducing dependency on foreign support.

He therefore called on government to place greater emphasis on supporting the private sector, suggesting the provision of interest-free loans to help businesses expand. This, he said, would lead to job creation and significantly reduce unemployment in the country.

Charles Sam also condemned political witch-hunting of private businesses whenever there is a change in government, describing the practice as harmful to economic growth and invester confidence.
