Breaking News: Galamsey Pit Collapse Claims One Life at Chirano

A suspected illegal mining (galamsey) pit collapse has claimed the life of a 37-year-old man at Chirano in the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipality of the Western North Region.

The deceased has been identified as Kofi Perday, popularly known as Obimanso. According to his brother, Nana Akwasi Danso, the unfortunate incident occurred while the victim was working at a galamsey site.

Narrating the incident, Nana Danso Akwasi said he was at home when he received a distress call informing him that a mining pit had collapsed on his brother. He immediately rushed to the Sefwi Anhwiaso Community Hospital where the victim had been transported.

He explained that while assisting to remove his brother from the vehicle upon arrival at the hospital, Kofi Perday sadly died in his arms.

The deceased, aged 37, has since been deposited at the Sefwi Anhwiaso Community Hospital mortuary.

Meanwhile, the police are expected to commence investigations into the incident to establish the circumstances that led to the pit collapse.

The tragedy has once again highlighted the dangers associated with illegal mining activities, which continue to pose serious risks to the lives of workers and nearby communities.
