NADMO Warns Farmers Against Premature Farming and Bush Burning During Dry Season
The Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipal Officer of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Madam Abubakari Aminatu, has cautioned farmers in the municipality against rushing to begin farming activities following recent rainfall, warning that the area is still within the dry season.
Speaking in an interview with the media, Madam Aminatu explained that the isolated rains experienced recently should not be mistaken as the start of the farming season. She urged farmers to exercise patience, noting that premature land preparation could expose them to losses, particularly through bushfires.
“We are still in the dry season, so farmers should not allow yesterday’s rain to deceive them into clearing or burning their farms,” she cautioned.
Madam Aminatu further advised that farmers who intend to clear their land through burning must first create proper fire belts around their farms. According to her, establishing fire belts is a critical safety measure to prevent fire from spreading to neighboring farms, homes, and forest areas.
She emphasized that uncontrolled bushfires continue to pose a serious threat to lives, property, and the environment, especially during the dry season. She therefore called on farmers to adopt safer land preparation methods and to strictly observe fire safety regulations.
The Municipal NADMO Officer also encouraged community members to report any incidents of bushfires promptly to the appropriate authorities, adding that collective vigilance would help reduce the risk of disasters during the dry season.
She concluded by appealing to traditional leaders, opinion leaders, and farmer groups to support NADMO’s public education efforts by helping to spread the message on fire prevention and environmental safety across communities in the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipality.
