Government to Build Modern Markets in All Districts to Support 24-Hour Economy
The Minister for Local Government, Sanitation, and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, has announced plans to construct modern markets across the country to support the 24-hour economy initiative.
According to him, every district will be required to build a modern market to enhance commercial activity.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament, Ahmed Ibrahim expressed confidence in the feasibility of the 24-hour economy. He explained that the government will identify commercial centers in each district and allocate 25% of the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) - approximately GHC 24 million annually - towards developing these commercial hubs.
The plan includes:
- Building schools nearby to enable farmers to have their children in school while they work in the markets
- Establishing fire and police posts to respond to emergencies such as fires or theft
Ahmed Ibrahim emphasized that the government's focus on the 24-hour economy goes beyond just providing electricity. The initiative aims to create an enabling environment for businesses to thrive.
Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama has announced that the 24-Hour Economy Policy, a flagship initiative of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), is ready and will take effect from July 1. The policy aims to keep the country's economy running around the clock, with a focus on production, service delivery, agriculture, and manufacturing.
