Driving or Riding Without a Valid License Is a Criminal Offence — Bibiani MTTD Commander Warns Road Users
The Bibiani District Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) Commander, DSP Emmanuel Osei, has issued a strong warning to drivers and motorcycle riders who continue to use the roads without valid driving or riding licenses, describing the practice as a violation of the country’s road traffic laws.
Speaking in an interview with the media, DSP Emmanuel Osei emphasized that no individual is permitted to drive a vehicle, ride a motorcycle, or operate any machine on public roads without first acquiring the necessary license from the appropriate authorities.
According to him, possessing a valid license is not only a legal requirement but also proof that a driver or rider has undergone the required training and understands road signs, traffic regulations, and safety procedures.
“Unless you have a valid license, you are not permitted to use a car or any machine on the road. It is against the law to drive or ride without a license,” he stressed.
DSP Emmanuel Osei explained that during routine police checks and road patrols, one of the first documents officers demand from motorists and riders is their valid driving or riding license before any other issues are addressed.
He warned that individuals found operating vehicles or motorcycles without licenses risk arrest, prosecution, and possible sanctions under the law.
The MTTD Commander further advised drivers and riders to ensure that their licenses are renewed regularly and carried on them at all times whenever they are using the road.
“When the police stop you on the road, the first thing they ask for is your driving or riding license. Drivers and riders must always carry their valid and renewed licenses with them,” he added.
DSP Emmanuel Osei also expressed concern over the increasing rate of indiscipline among some road users, particularly commercial motorcycle riders, popularly known as Okada and Pragya operators.
He noted that reckless riding, over-speeding, dangerous overtaking, and disregard for road safety regulations continue to contribute to accidents in the municipality and surrounding communities.
The commander therefore called on all motorists to prioritize safety and avoid behaviors that could endanger their lives and those of other road users.
He cautioned drivers and riders against driving under the influence of alcohol, smoking, or substance abuse, explaining that such practices reduce concentration, impair judgment, and significantly increase the risk of road accidents.
“Do not drink alcohol, smoke, or take any substance before driving or riding. Always stay alert, focused, and careful on the road,” he advised.
DSP Emmanuel Osei further urged parents, transport unions, and vehicle owners not to hand over vehicles or motorcycles to unqualified persons who do not possess licenses or lack adequate driving skills.
He reiterated the commitment of the Ghana Police Service and the MTTD to intensify road safety education, routine inspections, and law enforcement exercises aimed at reducing road accidents and promoting responsible road use within the Bibiani municipality.
He finally appealed to all road users to cooperate with the police and strictly obey traffic regulations to help create safer roads for everyone.
