Awutu Senya East MP provides essential items to newly admitted students to ease financial burden on parents

Member of Parliament for the Awutu Senya East Constituency, Hon. Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, has supported more than 1,200 newly admitted Senior High School (SHS) students in the constituency with essential items to help ease the financial burden on their parents and guardians.

The initiative is aimed at assisting first-year SHS students as they prepare to begin their secondary education, particularly at a time when the cost of basic boarding-school items continues to put significant pressure on families.

According to the constituency communication officer-in-waiting, Mr. Adande, the cost of preparing a child for SHS has become increasingly challenging for many parents.

He noted that a mattress alone can cost about GH¢400, while a trunk and chop box may each cost approximately GH¢280, in addition to other necessities such as buckets, blankets, provisions, school uniforms and other personal items.

He explained that the combined cost of these basic requirements could easily exceed GH¢1,000 per student, making the MP's intervention particularly important for families who may struggle to meet all the financial demands associated with SHS admission.

The support to more than 1,200 students, he said, demonstrates a significant commitment to education and social support within the Awutu Senya East Constituency.

Relief for Parents

Parents and guardians have reportedly expressed appreciation to Hon. Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor for the intervention, describing the initiative as timely, especially for families facing financial difficulties.

The support is expected to enable beneficiaries to report to their various schools with some of the essential items required for their studies, while reducing the immediate financial pressure on their families.

Mr. Adande described the initiative as a novel intervention in the Awutu Senya East Constituency, arguing that it represents a notable effort towards supporting young people in their educational journey.

He further commended the MP for prioritising education and responding to the needs of newly admitted SHS students.

Education Support

The initiative adds to broader calls for stakeholders, including Members of Parliament, government institutions, private organisations and individuals, to support families and students as they navigate the increasing cost of education.

Mr. Adande congratulated Hon. Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor for the intervention and urged beneficiaries to make good use of the opportunity by taking their studies seriously.

He said the support should serve as motivation for the students to work hard, remain disciplined and pursue their educational goals.

“Ayekoo to Hon. Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor for supporting over 1,200 SHS freshers and helping to reduce the burden on parents,” Mr. Adande said.
