“Apketeshe Shot” Remark Sparks Reaction After NPP Tour in Kukuom
A political comment made in the wake of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) tour of the Ahafo Region has stirred conversation in Kukuom, the capital of the Asunafo South District.
The Asunafo South Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Solomon Osei, has alleged that the NPP’s engagement with cocoa farmers in the area was merely symbolic, describing it as an “Apketeshe shot” — a local expression often used to suggest something short-lived or lacking substance.
The NPP tour, which forms part of a broader regional outreach, aimed at interacting with cocoa farmers and addressing concerns surrounding cocoa pricing and the challenges within the sector.
Speaking to the media, Mr. Osei argued that the discussions held during the engagement failed to provide concrete solutions to the pressing issues affecting cocoa farmers. He further pointed out that global cocoa prices have seen fluctuations, which continue to impact local farmers.
According to him, even neighboring countries are reportedly purchasing cocoa at comparatively lower prices, a situation he believes should prompt urgent and practical policy interventions rather than what he described as “brief engagements.”
He therefore appealed to Ghanaians to remain calm, assuring that conditions will improve at the appropriate time.
His remarks have since generated mixed reactions among residents and political observers, with some calling for a more issue-based discussion on how to improve the livelihoods of cocoa farmers, while others view the statement as part of the usual political exchanges between the two major parties.
The cocoa sector remains a vital pillar of Ghana’s economy, and stakeholders continue to emphasize the need for sustainable pricing, improved farmer support, and strategic reforms to ensure long-term growth.
