Ghanaians Urged to Support Quality Education and Teachers’ Welfare

The President of the National House of Chiefs and Omanhene of the Sefwi Anhwiaso Traditional Area, Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II, has called on Ghanaians, particularly individuals and organisations with the capacity, to support the development of quality education and improve the welfare of teachers.

He said education remained a shared responsibility and required the collective efforts of government, traditional authorities, private individuals, businesses and other stakeholders to create an enabling environment for effective teaching and learning.

Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II made the call during the official dedication and handing-over ceremony of four two-bedroom teachers’ apartment units constructed and donated to Sefwi Anhwiaso Queens Girls Senior High School.

The accommodation project was fully funded by Elder Prince Asamoah and his wife, Mrs. Margaret Asamoah, Chief Executive Officer of the Prince Mark Group of Companies, in response to a request for support from the school authorities.

The newly constructed apartments are expected to provide decent and convenient accommodation for teachers while helping the school address some of the challenges associated with teacher accommodation.

Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II commends donors

Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II, who is also the founder of Sefwi Anhwiaso Queens Girls SHS, expressed appreciation to Elder Prince Asamoah and Mrs. Margaret Asamoah for investing in the school and contributing to the welfare of its teaching staff.

He described the project as a meaningful contribution to the development of education in the area and appealed to other individuals, businesses and organisations to emulate the gesture.

According to him, improving educational infrastructure requires continuous support from all sectors of society, particularly at a time when schools need additional resources to provide quality education to students.

He urged other stakeholders to identify challenges facing schools within their communities and support initiatives that could improve teaching and learning.

Donor explains motivation

Speaking on behalf of her husband, Mrs. Margaret Asamoah said the decision to support the project followed a request from the school authorities for assistance with teachers’ accommodation.

She explained that after receiving the request, she and her husband decided to respond positively by funding the construction of the four two-bedroom apartments.

Mrs. Asamoah stressed that the development of communities should not be left entirely to government, saying individuals and businesses with the necessary resources and vision could also play an important role in addressing developmental challenges.

She encouraged other philanthropists and corporate organisations to support educational institutions and other community projects that have a direct impact on people's lives.

Headmistress highlights importance of accommodation

The Headmistress of Sefwi Anhwiaso Queens Girls SHS, Mrs. Evelyn Doris Acquah, expressed gratitude to the donors for what she described as a major intervention for the school.

She explained that the school had previously faced challenges due to the lack of adequate accommodation for teachers.

According to her, the situation sometimes made it difficult for teachers to remain close to the school, particularly outside regular working hours.

Mrs. Acquah said the new accommodation would not only provide teachers with decent living conditions but would also enhance discipline, supervision and the general administration of the school.

She noted that having teachers closer to the school would make it easier for them to monitor students, respond to emergencies and provide the necessary support beyond classroom hours.

She therefore expressed the school’s appreciation to the Asamoahs for responding to the institution’s needs and investing in the welfare of teachers.

Call for more support

The ceremony brought together traditional leaders, school authorities, teachers, students, community members and other stakeholders who commended the donors for their contribution.

The project is expected to serve as an example of how private individuals and organisations can complement government efforts in the provision of educational infrastructure.

Stakeholders at the event also called for sustained collaboration among government, traditional authorities, the private sector and communities to address infrastructure and welfare challenges confronting schools across the country.

The newly completed teachers’ apartments are expected to contribute to a more conducive working environment for teachers and ultimately support efforts to improve academic performance at Sefwi Anhwiaso Queens Girls Senior High School.
