Former Akontonbra DCE Throws Support Behind Election of MMDCEs

President John Dramani Mahama has hinted at a potential shift from appointing Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to electing them, as part of a broader constitutional reform agenda aimed at deepening local democracy and accountability.

Speaking at an orientation and training workshop for MMDCEs in Accra on June 18, 2025, President Mahama emphasized the importance of empowering local governance.

Reacting to this proposal, Hon. Yawson Amoah, former District Chief Executive for Akontonbra District in the Western North region, has expressed his support for the election of MMDCEs.

Accordingt to Hon Amoah, this move is in the right direction and aligns with the NPP government's past objectives.

Hon. Amoah believes that electing MMDCEs will provide them with the opportunity to share their vision with constituents and grant them independence in their duties. This, he argues, will lead to more effective local governance and representation.

When asked about the conduct of MMDCE elections, Hon. Amoah suggested that only individuals within the ruling government should be allowed to contest, excluding opposition party members. This proposal has sparked interest in the potential implications for local governance and democracy in Ghana.
