As part of the 2025 Eluo Yam Festival, celebrated under the theme “Our Heritage, Our People, Our Development,” organizers rolled out a free health screening exercise for residents of Bibiani, Anhwiaso, Subri, Awaso, and Asawinso ‘A.’

The initiative forms part of efforts to promote good health and enhance community well-being during this year’s festival.

Speaking to the media, Nana Ebiri Kwaku II, Bibiani Hwenampori Chief and a member of the Festival Planning Committee, explained that the screening exercise is an important component of the festival’s activities. He emphasized that the festival is not only about cultural celebration but also about improving the welfare of the people.

“Our aim is to use this festival as a platform to support the health needs of our people. A healthy community is a strong community, and we believe this screening will help many identify conditions that require attention,” he said.

Mrs. Margaret Awuah, a Senior Midwifery Officer and Bibiani Sub-District Head, also addressed participants. She revealed that hypertension (high blood pressure) recorded the highest number of cases among all the conditions screened.

She urged the public to adopt healthier lifestyles to reduce the risk of hypertension and other non-communicable diseases.

“We encourage community members to cut down on salt intake, oily foods, and excessive consumption of fresh meat. Regular exercise is also essential to maintaining good health,” she stated.

Some beneficiaries who took part in the exercise expressed their gratitude to the organizers. They noted that the screening has helped them become more aware of their health status—especially those who previously had no idea they were at risk of hypertension and other underlying health issues.

They also appealed for similar programs to be organized more frequently to support the health needs of the less privileged.

The free health screening continues to stand out as one of the festival’s most impactful social interventions, reinforcing the festival’s theme by promoting community development, unity, and well-being.
