Madam Martha Nnekah Opara, the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipal National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) Director, has stated that Ghana’s Constitution Day Celebration should be observed as the most significant of all public holidays.

Describing the holiday as symbolic, she argues the 1992 constitution set the pace and ushered the country into a period of political stability and development.

To her, “the Constitution Day is not just a day to celebrate the nation’s constitution but to celebrate the peace we have enjoyed and the framework put in place by government that has ensured stability from 1993.

Speaking to Bibianinews.com, she said they are the duty bearers to intensify educational campaigns about the day.

“It is good we celebrate Constitution Day, but education about the day and its relevance is lacking. We need to educate the populace more about the constitution and why we celebrate Constitution Day.”

In December 2018, a bill was laid before the Parliament of Ghana to amend the Public Holiday Act, 2001 (Act 601) to provide for three different holidays.

These new holidays are on January 7, Constitution Day; August 4, as Founder’s Day and September 21 as Dr. Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day.

The bill was subsequently passed by Parliament and assented to by the President.

Constitution Day is to commemorate the establishment of a new constitution for the fourth republic of Ghana in January 1993- popularly known as the 1992 constitution of Ghana.
