Plastic manufacturers to shut down production over 5% excise tax introduce by government

Ghana Plastic Manufacturers Association, Plastic Manufacturer Sellers, Sachet water Manufacturers threatened to shut down production over the new 5% Excise tax implementation on all locally manufactured plastic products by government.

The Association gives the government 1 week to respond to their request and suspended the 5% tax immediately else they will embark on a massive demonstration.

Speaking at a press conference, Mr Ebo Botwe, the president of Ghana Plastic Manufacturers Association, warned the Ghana Revenue Authority GRA to stop the harassment of plastic manufacturers.

According to him, if this new tax is implemented in it current form, it will bring with it a server cascading high rise effect on prices of products that affect their everyday life because plastics and plastic packaging forms about 98% of our daily basic needs.

He said the impact on sachet drinking water if this tax is implemented will be extremely catastrophic as the plastic packaging alone makes up 73% of its total production cost.

Dr. Joseph Obeng, the President of the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA), has backed the Association's decision to shut down their production.

He said the business is collapsing because government has imposed so Monday tax on companies which is not helping at all.

He therefore calls on the government to stop the implementation of the 5% excise tax on all locally manufactured plastic products.
