EDUCATION: Nana Ekyea Akwassi: Discipline Key to Raising Responsible Future Leaders

Nana Ekyea Akwassi, Abakomahene of the Sefwi Anhwiaso-Bekwai area and Queen Mother of Sefwi Tanoso Praso, has called for a renewed emphasis on discipline in schools across the country, stressing that discipline is essential to producing responsible and successful future leaders.

Nana Ekyea Akwassi made the call while speaking to the media during the presentation of teaching and learning materials and assorted refreshments to the Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai Municipal Education Directorate on behalf of the Sefwi Anhwiaso Traditional Council Paramount Chief and President of the National House of Chiefs, Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II.

According to her, academic excellence alone is not enough to prepare young people for the responsibilities of adulthood and leadership. She said students must also be taught discipline, respect, responsibility and good moral values.

Nana Ekyea Akwassi expressed concern about what she described as the declining level of discipline among some young people and called on parents, teachers and traditional authorities to work together to address the situation.

She noted that schools play a major role in shaping the character of children, and therefore teachers and school authorities must not only focus on academic performance but also help students develop good attitudes and responsible behaviour.

She further urged parents and guardians to take an active role in the upbringing of their children, stressing that the responsibility of raising disciplined children should not be left entirely to teachers and school authorities.

According to her, parents must monitor the behaviour of their children, teach them respect for elders and authority, and encourage them to take their education seriously.

Nana Ekyea Akwassi also appealed to students to respect their teachers, school authorities and colleagues and to avoid behaviours that could negatively affect their education and future prospects.

She stressed that discipline helps students develop self-control, punctuality, commitment and respect—qualities that are important not only in school but also in their future careers and personal lives.

The Queen Mother of Sefwi Tanoso Praso further called on teachers to serve as positive role models for students and maintain a good relationship with parents and the wider community.

She said when parents, teachers, traditional leaders and other stakeholders work together, they can create an environment where children are properly guided and prepared to become responsible citizens.

Nana Ekyea Akwassi expressed the hope that renewed efforts to promote discipline in schools would contribute to reducing social vices among young people and help Ghana produce a generation of competent, responsible and morally upright leaders.

She therefore urged all stakeholders in education to make discipline a priority alongside academic achievement, saying a well-educated child must also be a well-disciplined and responsible member of society.
