NDC Communicator Calls for Mindset Change to End Illegal Mining
A communicator for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai Constituency, Charles Obeng, popularly known as Sir Coke, has called on Ghanaians to renew their mindset and collective attitude toward illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, to help eliminate the menace from the country.
Speaking on Okyeame Radio’s “Oman No Adwuma” show with host Akuapem-Hann, Sir Coke emphasized that galamsey brings no benefit to the nation and only destroys lands, water bodies, and livelihoods. He warned that lands destroyed by illegal mining cannot be restored for any meaningful use, urging landowners to desist from leasing their farmlands to illegal miners.
He alleged that some opinion leaders, chiefs, politicians, and assembly members are complicit in the practice, making it difficult to eradicate. However, he commended patriotic individuals such as the Chief of Sefwi Subri and former Assembly Member for Anhwiaso Electoral Area, Hon. Gyasi Newlove, who rejected huge financial offers from illegal miners, choosing to protect their communities. He questioned how many others would have the courage to do the same.
“A leader involved in galamsey cannot urge his followers to stop,” he noted, stressing the need for integrity and exemplary leadership in the fight against illegal mining.
Sir Coke further revealed that many Ghanaians are afraid to speak against the menace due to threats and fear of attacks by illegal miners. He warned of the long-term consequences of polluted water bodies and degraded farmlands, which will affect future generations if urgent action is not taken.
He appealed to illegal miners to advise themselves, adding that the devastating effects of their activities will eventually return to haunt their own families and communities.
