Joemars Proprietor Urges Parents to Monitor Children's Social Media Use

The Proprietor of Joemars Educational Complex, Mr. Isaac Ayim, has called on parents and guardians to take greater responsibility in monitoring their children's use of mobile phones and social media.

He made the appeal during the school's graduation ceremony held at Sefwi Adukrom in the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipality of the Western North Region.

According to Mr. Ayim, while technology and social media have become important tools for communication and education, many children are increasingly using their phones for activities that do not contribute to their academic and personal development.

He expressed concern that a significant number of students spend hours on social media platforms, especially TikTok, where they are sometimes exposed to inappropriate content and negative influences that can affect their behaviour, discipline, and academic performance.

Mr. Ayim urged parents not to give their children unrestricted access to mobile phones without proper supervision. Instead, he encouraged them to guide their children to use smartphones for educational purposes, such as online research, digital learning platforms, and other academic resources that will enhance their knowledge and skills.

He acknowledged that social media has many benefits, including access to information, educational content, and communication, but warned that it also has a negative side when not used responsibly.

"Social media is good, but it also has its bad side. As parents, we must guide our children to use technology wisely so that it becomes a tool for learning rather than a source of distraction," he advised.

Mr. Ayim further encouraged parents to maintain regular communication with their children about responsible online behaviour and to work closely with teachers to ensure that technology is used to support education rather than undermine it.

He concluded by reminding parents that raising responsible and well-disciplined children requires a collective effort between the home and the school, stressing that proper guidance today will help shape future leaders for the nation.
