Free Primary Healthcare Program Targets Rural Communities — Bono Regional Minister
The Bono Regional Minister, Joseph Addae Akwaboah, has underscored the importance of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s newly launched Free Primary Healthcare Programme, stating that it is designed to expand access to essential healthcare services, particularly for people living in rural communities.
Speaking during the “Accounting to the People” tour in the Dormaa Central Municipality, the Minister explained that the initiative aims to promote healthy living by addressing the basic healthcare needs of underserved populations.
He also accused the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) of reviving what he described as propaganda and misinformation tactics similar to those deployed against John Dramani Mahama ahead of the 2016 general elections.
According to him, the NDC government remains committed to prioritizing the welfare of rural communities, where residents often face significant primary healthcare challenges. He noted that the rollout of the Free Primary Healthcare Programme, alongside the construction of Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds, is intended to ease these burdens by bringing healthcare services closer to the people. This, he said, will help ensure that citizens remain healthy and productive in their daily activities.
Addressing claims circulating in the public space, Hon. Akwaboah dismissed allegations that the government has replaced ambulances with tricycles. He clarified that the tricycles introduced under the programme are not meant to function as ambulances but are instead designated for transporting nurses and healthcare personnel to remote communities, villages, and settlements to deliver essential services.
He further described assertions by the NPP that the tricycles are intended as ambulance substitutes as misleading and without merit, urging the public to disregard such claims.
The Minister added that it is a positive step that President Mahama has prioritized investing in accessible healthcare delivery tools, such as tricycles, to extend services to rural populations.
