Chief Calls on Students to Prioritize STEM for Global Advantage
The President of the National House of Chiefs and Paramount Chief of the Sefwi Anhwiaso Traditional Area, Osenkesie Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi Akankanfo II, has challenged students of Bibiani Senior High Technical School (BISEC) to embrace Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education to position themselves for opportunities in the modern world.
Addressing students and stakeholders on the BISEC campus during the official launch of the BISEC Legacy Project fundraising, Ogyeahoho Gyebi II stressed that the future belongs to students who acquire STEM-related skills.
He encouraged them to “run away from over-concentration on the social sciences” and rather aim for fields that will make them competitive and relevant both locally and internationally.
The Legacy Project, championed by the Great Group of 1992 and Associates, seeks to construct a multi-purpose ultra-modern E-Library, estimated at GHC 80 billion old cedis.
The digital library, designed to expand research capacity and modern learning, is being developed under the theme:
“Our School, Our Pride, Our Legacy.”
Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II called on alumni, parents, corporate bodies and the general public to support the initiative, emphasizing that the project will not only uplift the school but also transform academic excellence in the entire municipality.
He urged students to take advantage of the facility once completed, noting that education rooted in science and technology is the surest path to economic empowerment and innovation.
The Board Chairman of BISEC and Head of the Agricultural Economics Department at KNUST, Professor Robert Aidoo, also addressed the gathering.
He described the proposed E-Library as a strategic investment that aligns with global education standards.
According to Professor Aidoo, the board fully embraced the idea because it complements government’s efforts to promote digital learning across the country.
He further outlined plans put in place to ensure that the Legacy Project is executed professionally and delivered on schedule to serve its intended purpose.
The Headmaster of Bibiani Senior High Technical School, Mr. George Baidooh, expressed gratitude to the 1992 Year Group for the initiative, describing it as timely and necessary.
He explained that the school’s existing library can accommodate only 40 students at a time, a serious limitation for a student population of over 2,800.
Mr. Baidooh noted that the new E-Library will not only benefit BISEC students but will also serve residents of Bibiani and students across the Western North Region, providing a modern space for research, digital learning, and academic development.
He added that the project aligns with the school’s vision of becoming a center of academic excellence and innovation.
