Marking this year’s Independent Day celebrations, all workers of Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipal Assembly in collaboration with the Environmental Health and Sanitation department of the Assembly, Zoomlion, security services such as the Ghana Police, Immigration and Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has organized a cleanup exercise within the principal streets of Bibiani the municipal capital to rid its filth.

During the exercise, staff from the various departments were seen tidying up areas allocated to them, since the area of work was shared according to each department.

The waste collection trucks saw most of the workers picking up rubbish while others collect them into waste bins for final collection.

In an interview with the Municipal Chief Executive for Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipal Assembly, Hon Paul Andoh, he explained that this sanitation effort is part of the preparations for the Western North Regional grand event to be held in Bibiani.

According to Hon Paul Andoh, “Bibiani will host high-profile dignitaries during the Independence Day festivities, making cleanliness a top priority.”

Hon. Paul Andoh, who sounded disappointed in the citizenry said, it is very unhealthy that some residents would throw rubbish unto the median of the road.

He further stated that when there is an outbreak of any disease, the people likely to be affected are residents living closer to the filth, so it was important that they take the cleanliness of their environment very serious

Hon. Paul Andoh also stressed on the fact that hawkers along the roadside also have a responsibility of cleaning their frontages when it gets dirty, but more often than not, they ignore and sell in the filth. He therefore asked them to always do what is needed by cleaning their surroundings, including the drains.

Hon. Paul sounded a word of caution to residents who litter the environment. That arrests will be made and culprits prosecuted to serve as deterrent to others.

He therefore appealed to Ghanaians to change their attitudes towards sanitation and be conscious about the environment.

The Municipal Environmental Health Officer, Mr. Cephas Kwaku Dzakah, said this year’s Independent Day celebration differs from the previous because of Bibiani being the Regional host.

Mr. Cephas noted the Assembly will continue to do its bit in ensuring that the environment is always clean.

He also warned that recalcitrant offenders will be arrested and prosecuted.

He added that the assembly has taken notice of the fact that most people throw litter from moving vehicles. This is because they do not have waste bins in their vehicles.

He therefore asked drivers to do the right thing by providing litter bins so that commuters can put refuse in them. “We are going to enforce the law, we will be coming to ensure that drivers who engage in such an act are taken on”, he opined.

Mr. Cephas also appreciated the role the MCE and the commanders of the security services played by being personally involved in the exercise describing it as good leadership.

Mrs.Anaafi Linda, the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipal Zoomlion officer on her part appealed to the people of the Bibiani and it’s envrons to desist from indiscriminate littering and dumping of waste in unauthorized places.

Hairdresser, keep fit fun clubs and other Organizations were involved in the clean up execise and they were satisfied with the level of work and effort put in during the exercise and wanted the assembly to organize such activities on regular basis.
