Bismarck Appiah Aboagye Elected GFD President in Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai

Bismarck Appiah Aboagye has been elected as the new President of the Ghana Federation of Disability (GFD) in the Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai Municipality, after securing a decisive victory over his contender, Rev. Joshua Nsia.

The election, which brought together 21 delegates, saw Mr. Bismarck Appiah Aboagye obtain 14 votes, while Rev. Joshua Nsia polled 7 votes.

His election gives him a four-year mandate to lead the federation and champion the interests and welfare of persons with disabilities within the municipality.

MCE Calls for Unity and Support for PWDs

Speaking after the election, the Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Sebastian Obeng, congratulated the newly elected president and urged him to work closely with his fellow executives and members to achieve the objectives of the federation.

The MCE called on the new executives to put aside their differences and work together in the interest of all persons with disabilities in the municipality.

He also urged persons with disabilities not to allow their physical conditions to prevent them from participating fully in society.

Hon. Sebastian Obeng encouraged PWDs to be confident, identify their abilities and take advantage of opportunities available to them rather than allowing discrimination or societal attitudes to limit their potential.

He further called on members of the public to desist from discriminating against persons with disabilities, stressing that disability should not be used as a basis for denying anyone opportunities, respect or equal participation in society.

According to him, persons with disabilities have important contributions to make to the development of their communities and should therefore be supported and encouraged to become self-reliant.

Government Support for Persons with Disabilities

The MCE also highlighted government interventions aimed at supporting persons with disabilities, particularly in the areas of education and skills development.

He explained that there are special packages and opportunities available to PWDs who wish to further their education or acquire vocational and artisan skills.

He therefore encouraged members of the federation who want to return to school or learn a trade to take advantage of such opportunities to improve their livelihoods.

Hon. Sebastian Obeng urged the new leadership of the GFD to educate its members about these opportunities and assist them in accessing the relevant support.

He said empowering persons with disabilities through education, skills training and economic opportunities would help them become independent and contribute meaningfully to the development of the municipality.

New President Pledges Commitment

In his acceptance speech, the newly elected GFD President, Bismarck Appiah Aboagye, expressed his appreciation to the delegates and members of the federation for the confidence they had reposed in him.

He thanked those who voted for him and acknowledged the responsibility that comes with his new position.

Mr. Appiah Aboagye pledged to work together with his fellow executives to promote the welfare and interests of persons with disabilities in the municipality.

He appealed to members to unite behind the new administration, saying unity would be essential to achieving the federation’s goals.

He also expressed his readiness to engage relevant stakeholders to identify challenges confronting PWDs and seek practical solutions to them.

Call for Regular Training and Opportunities

Mr. Appiah Aboagye is expected to use his experience in education, law and journalism to support advocacy and awareness on issues affecting persons with disabilities.

He is a professional teacher, a law student and a journalist who works as an Akan news broadcaster with Adehyie FM in Bibiani.

His election comes at a time when stakeholders continue to advocate for greater inclusion of persons with disabilities in education, employment, entrepreneurship and community development.

The new GFD leadership is expected to work with the Municipal Assembly, government agencies, traditional authorities, civil society organisations and other stakeholders to create more opportunities for members.

The election ended with calls for unity, inclusiveness and stronger collaboration to ensure that persons with disabilities in the Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai Municipality are not left behind in the development process.
