Atwima Mponua NPP Constituency Executive Elections Postponed Following Reported Court Injunction

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Constituency Executive Elections scheduled to take place in the Atwima Mponua Constituency on Sunday have been postponed following a reported court injunction.

The unexpected development came at a time when all election preparations had been completed. Aspirants, their polling agents, and hundreds of delegates had gathered at the election venue, ready to participate in the exercise, when news of the alleged injunction emerged.

According to information gathered at the venue, the District Electoral Commission (EC) Officer, Madam Cynthia Tuffour, invited all aspirants and their polling agents to a meeting where she informed them that she had received a phone message from her superiors indicating that a court injunction had been placed on the elections.

Madam Tuffour explained that due to the reported court order, she could not proceed to supervise the election, stressing that the Electoral Commission was unable to conduct the exercise until the legal issues had been resolved.

However, the Constituency Director of Elections, Mr. Justice Nkrumah, expressed surprise over the development, insisting that the constituency election committee had not been officially informed about any court injunction.

Speaking to the media, Mr. Nkrumah questioned why the election committee had not received formal communication if indeed a court had halted the process.

"If the injunction is genuine, why was the election committee not officially informed? Aspirants have spent time and resources campaigning, while delegates have travelled long distances to vote. The EC Officer did not even show us the alleged text message from her authorities, making the situation even more surprising," he stated.

Several aspirants also voiced their disappointment, describing the postponement as shocking and unfortunate. They indicated that they had no knowledge of the individuals who allegedly filed the court action and questioned why the names of the plaintiffs and the specific court that issued the injunction had not been disclosed.

According to the aspirants, they were only informed that four individuals had taken the matter to court, but no official documents or court order were presented to them.

Some delegates who had travelled from various electoral areas to cast their votes also expressed frustration over the last-minute postponement.

They appealed to the national leadership of the NPP to ensure transparency and proper communication in handling internal party elections, warning that such incidents could negatively affect the party's unity and preparations ahead of the 2028 general elections.

The delegates questioned how a constituency-wide election involving hundreds of party members could be suspended without official communication reaching the regional or constituency executives.

As of the time of filing this report, no official statement had been issued by the Regional or National leadership of the New Patriotic Party regarding the reported court injunction or a new date for the postponed constituency executive elections.
