Abandoned Sankore Lorry Terminal Project to Resume After Eight Years – Hon. Eric Opoku

The Minister for Food and Agriculture and Member of Parliament for the Asunafo South Constituency, , has announced that work on the abandoned Sankore Lorry Terminal project will soon resume after remaining stalled for the past eight years.

According to the Minister, a new contractor has been engaged to continue and complete the project within six months, bringing renewed hope to residents, commercial drivers, traders, and commuters who have long awaited the completion of the modern transport terminal.

Hon. Eric Opoku made the announcement during the presentation of six brand-new pickup vehicles to the Asunafo South District Health Directorate at the launch of the Asunafo South District Assembly's Free Primary Healthcare Programme.

Speaking to the gathering, the Minister said the completion of the lorry terminal will significantly improve transportation in Sankore and transform the township into a more vibrant commercial centre.

He explained that the modern terminal will include well-designed passenger loading bays, spacious stores and shops for traders, modern toilet facilities, waiting areas, and other essential amenities expected of a modern transport terminal.

According to him, the facility will not only provide comfort and convenience for travelers but will also create business opportunities for market women, food vendors, shop owners, and other small-scale entrepreneurs who depend on transport activities for their livelihoods.

"The project will provide a decent environment for passengers and commercial drivers while creating employment and business opportunities for many people. Traders will have access to modern stores, and the Assembly will also generate more revenue from transport-related activities," he stated.

Hon. Eric Opoku emphasized that although the project will benefit the Asunafo South District Assembly through increased internally generated funds from transport operations, the intervention is being undertaken through his personal initiative to accelerate development in the constituency rather than as a District Assembly project.

He recounted that construction of the Sankore Lorry Terminal commenced during the first administration of President under the National Democratic Congress (NDC). However, he said the project was abandoned after the change of government in 2017 and remained untouched throughout the subsequent eight years.

"Since the project was abandoned, the people of Sankore have continued to endure the inconvenience of an incomplete transport terminal. With the return of the NDC to government, we are determined to complete this important project for the benefit of our people," he said.

The Minister assured residents that the newly engaged contractor has been tasked to work diligently and deliver the project within the six-month timeline.

He further appealed to the people of Asunafo South, including Muslim and Christian leaders, as well as traditional authorities, to continue praying for him and supporting his efforts to bring more development projects to the constituency.

"My greatest desire is to see Asunafo South develop. I therefore appeal to our chiefs, religious leaders, and every resident to continue praying for me and supporting the work we are doing because this constituency is very dear to my heart," Hon. Eric Opoku said.

Residents and commercial drivers welcomed the announcement with excitement, expressing optimism that the completion of the long-abandoned terminal will improve transportation, enhance sanitation, boost local businesses, and stimulate economic growth in Sankore and the wider Asunafo South Constituency.

The resumption of the Sankore Lorry Terminal project is expected to become one of the major infrastructure initiatives aimed at improving public transport services and supporting local economic development in the constituency.
