10 Suspected Nigerian Commercial Sex Workers Arrested at Sefwi Chirano
Ten suspected Nigerian commercial sex workers have been arrested by the Bibiani Divisional Police Command during an operation at Sefwi Chirano in the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipality of the Western North Region.
The suspects, all believed to be Nigerian nationals, were apprehended for allegedly engaging in commercial sex work within the community.
Briefing the media, the Municipal Coordinator of the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU), ASP Evelyn Ayinati Yitamkey, confirmed the arrests. She disclosed that during preliminary investigations, the suspects admitted they had willingly travelled from Nigeria to Ghana to engage in prostitution.
According to ASP Yitamkey, prostitution is contrary to the laws of Ghana. She noted that the Ghana Police Service is collaborating with the Ghana Immigration Service to complete the necessary processes for the suspects to be repatriated to their home country.
She further cautioned landlords and property owners against renting out their premises for illegal activities, stressing that anyone who knowingly allows their property to be used for criminal purposes could be treated as an accomplice and face arrest and prosecution under the law.
The police say they will continue to intensify operations aimed at combating crime and maintaining law and order within the municipality.
