Residents Voluntarily Clear Bibiani–Goaso Highway to Improve Road Safety

Young men from Abofrem in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region have taken it upon themselves to clear overgrown vegetation along sections of the Bibiani–Goaso Highway in an effort to improve visibility and prevent road accidents.

Speaking to the media while undertaking the exercise, the young men said they were motivated by the poor state of the roadside, which has become heavily overgrown with bushes due to the absence of routine maintenance.

According to them, it has been more than ten years since labourers under government road maintenance programmes last cleared the vegetation along the stretch of road. Concerned about the danger the overgrown bushes pose to motorists and pedestrians, they decided to act.

"As residents of Abofrem, we use this road frequently and have witnessed how the bushes obstruct visibility for drivers. We felt it was necessary to do something to help reduce the risk of accidents," one of the volunteers explained.

The volunteers also expressed concern over the behaviour of some drivers, alleging that many motorists fail to slow down when approaching areas where they are working. They said the reckless driving puts their lives at risk despite their efforts to improve safety on the highway.

The young men further revealed that some road users have mocked them for undertaking the exercise under the scorching sun, suggesting that they had no meaningful work to do. However, they insisted that their actions are driven by a desire to serve their community and protect lives.

Mr. Agbah Winfred, the Unit Committee Member for Abofrem, who organized the exercise, commended the volunteers for their commitment to community development.

He noted that the initiative was aimed at enhancing visibility along the highway and reducing the likelihood of road crashes caused by overgrown vegetation.

Mr. Winfred appealed to the government, the Ministry of Roads and Highways, and other relevant authorities to provide support and ensure regular maintenance of the Bibiani–Goaso Highway.

He stressed that community members cannot continue to shoulder the responsibility alone and called for urgent intervention to keep the road safe for all users.

Residents have since praised the volunteers for their selfless efforts and expressed hope that authorities will respond to the call for improved road maintenance in the area.
