The Forest Service Division, Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai, in their quest to protect and maintain the virginity of our forest, is embarking on a series of operations to ensure that illegal mining, farming and logging activities become a thing of the past.
So far, they have caused destroying several excavators, chamfines, and heavy water pumping machines by setting them on fire, and they have also apprehended and turned over to the police for prosecution some Ghanaians and Chinese individuals.
Speaking with Bibianinews.com, after revisiting some reserves, Mr James Osei Gyimah, deputy Manager, Forest Service Division, Bibiani, re-echoed areas in the Municipality they are having challenges regarding illegal mining activities in the forest reserve, Nkatieso, Beposo, Ampongtengkrom, Sraha Ayiem, Ankwaso, Dwabo, Motherso, Akatrika and Amenase.
Mr. Gyimah stated that Chirano Gold Mines, Awaso Bauxite Company Limited (GBC), and Koantwi Mining Company Limited have received mining leases to operate in the forest. He also added a cautionary note, stating that anyone who associates themselves with miners other than the ones mentioned above does so at their own peril.
