“State Burial Needed to Celebrate Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, a Trailblazer for Women – Biri Emmanuel”
Mr. Biri Emmanuel, the Convener of the Socialist Movement of Ghana (Bibiani Collective), has appealed to the government to grant the late Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings a state burial in recognition of her exceptional service and contributions to national development, democracy, and women’s empowerment.
Speaking in Bibiani, Mr. Emmanuel described Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings as a courageous and visionary woman whose life and work left an indelible mark on Ghana’s political and social landscape.
He noted that as the founder of the 31st December Women’s Movement, Nana Konadu championed the cause of women, fought tirelessly for their rights, and opened doors for their participation in leadership and decision-making at all levels.
According to him, her efforts transformed the lives of countless women, especially in rural areas, by promoting education, economic independence, and gender equality.
“Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings was not only the wife of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, but also a strong, independent, and determined leader who stood for justice, equality, and progress,” Mr. Emmanuel said.
“She fought for women to be seen, heard, and respected in national development, and her impact will be remembered for generations.”
Mr. Emmanuel emphasized that the Socialist Movement of Ghana, particularly the Bibiani Collective, deeply mourns her passing and stands in solidarity with her family, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and all Ghanaians during this moment of grief.
He therefore urged the government to honor her memory with a state burial to reflect her national significance and the legacy she leaves behind.
“Giving Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings a state burial is not just about honoring an individual, but about celebrating the life of a woman who changed the course of Ghana’s history,” he added.
