The initiative included breast and cervical cancer screening, hepatitis and malaria testing, blood pressure checks and HPV vaccination.

MedRoam Africa and the This Girl Can Foundation, in collaboration with the Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai Municipal Health Directorate, have organised a free health screening exercise for residents of Bibiani and its surrounding communities to promote early detection of diseases and raise awareness about breast and cervical cancer.

The exercise, held under the theme “Sensitisation on Breast Cancer and Cervical Cancer Awareness Creation,” featured breast cancer screening, cervical cancer screening, hepatitis testing, malaria screening, blood pressure checks and human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination.

The initiative formed part of activities to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October and was aimed at encouraging residents to prioritise their health by taking advantage of screening services and seeking medical attention when necessary.

Public Health Nurse Urges Residents to Prioritise Regular Check-ups

Speaking during the exercise, the District Public Health Nurse, Mrs Patience Aikins Nusenu, explained that October is recognised as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, making it an important period to educate the public about the disease and promote early detection.

She said the Municipal Health Directorate partnered with MedRoam Africa and the This Girl Can Foundation to provide free screening services to residents of Bibiani and neighbouring communities.

Mrs Nusenu encouraged the public to make regular medical check-ups a priority, stressing the importance of knowing one's health status and seeking professional medical advice.

She urged residents not to wait until they experience symptoms before visiting a health facility, noting that regular screening can help identify certain health conditions early and improve the chances of receiving timely treatment.

This Girl Can Foundation Founder Calls for Women's Health Awareness

The Founder of the This Girl Can Foundation, Abigail Ato Aggrey, also called on women to attend health facilities regularly for breast and cervical cancer screening.

She emphasised the need for women to seek professional medical examinations rather than rely on misconceptions about breast cancer prevention.

According to her, the belief that squeezing or massaging a woman's breast by a man can prevent breast cancer is not a substitute for proper medical screening and professional healthcare advice.

Abigail Ato Aggrey further encouraged men to take an active role in promoting women's health by supporting their wives and partners and accompanying them to health facilities for regular medical examinations.

She noted that the support of partners and family members could help encourage women to seek medical care and take their health seriously.

Beneficiaries Applaud Organisers

Some beneficiaries expressed appreciation to MedRoam Africa, the This Girl Can Foundation and the Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai Municipal Health Directorate for bringing the free screening services closer to residents.

They described the initiative as beneficial and appealed to the organisers to sustain the exercise and make it an annual programme to enable more people to access screening services.

The exercise highlighted the importance of collaboration between health authorities and non-governmental organisations in promoting preventive healthcare and improving public awareness of diseases.

Through such initiatives, residents are encouraged to take greater responsibility for their health, seek professional medical advice and embrace regular screening as part of their healthcare routine.
