HON. DOMINIC GYASI, SEFWI WIAWSO MCE, PROMISES SPECIAL SCHOOLS FOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES

Sefwi Wiawso, Western North Region — The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Sefwi Wiawso, Hon. Dominic Gyasi, has assured Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) and their families of the Assembly’s commitment to improving access to quality and inclusive education in the municipality.

Speaking during an engagement with Persons With Disabilities, Hon. Gyasi announced his intention to push for the establishment of special schools in the Sefwi Wiawso Municipality to cater for the unique educational needs of children and persons with disabilities.

According to the MCE, every child deserves access to quality education regardless of their physical or developmental condition, stressing that education remains one of the most important tools for creating equal opportunities and improving lives.

He said the proposed schools would be designed to provide a supportive and conducive learning environment, with the necessary teaching and learning materials, trained teachers and appropriate assistive facilities to meet the needs of learners with disabilities.

“Disability is not inability. Every child, regardless of their challenge, deserves the opportunity to learn, grow and contribute meaningfully to society,” Hon. Gyasi stated.

Collaboration With Key Stakeholders

The MCE said the initiative would require collaboration among relevant stakeholders, including the Ghana Education Service, traditional authorities, parents, disability organizations and other development partners.

He assured that he would engage the appropriate institutions and stakeholders to explore ways of turning the proposal into a reality.

Hon. Gyasi explained that providing appropriate educational facilities for PWDs would not only improve their academic development but also help equip them with the skills and confidence needed to become productive and independent members of society.

Parents and PWDs Welcome Announcement

The announcement was welcomed by Persons With Disabilities, parents and other stakeholders, who described the proposed initiative as an important step towards improving the educational opportunities available to children with disabilities in the municipality.

They expressed hope that the establishment of special schools would help address some of the challenges families face in accessing suitable educational facilities for children with special learning needs.

According to them, access to appropriate education would promote dignity, independence and greater participation of persons with disabilities in community development.

Building an Inclusive Municipality

The proposed special-school initiative comes on the heels of the Sefwi Wiawso Municipal Assembly’s recent support to Persons With Disabilities through the distribution of income-generating items and assistive devices, including chest freezers, industrial sewing machines, fufu pounding machines, wheelchairs, crutches and white canes.

The support is aimed at promoting economic empowerment, mobility and self-reliance among PWDs in the municipality.

Hon. Dominic Gyasi reaffirmed his commitment to working towards a municipality where persons with disabilities are not excluded from development opportunities.

He emphasized that inclusive development requires investment in both education and economic empowerment, noting that every individual should have a fair opportunity to learn, work, develop their potential and contribute to society.

The MCE expressed optimism that continued collaboration between the Assembly, government agencies, traditional authorities and other stakeholders would help advance the disability agenda and create a more inclusive Sefwi Wiawso Municipality.
