C/R: THREE SCHOOL CHILDREN AND A TAXI DRIVER DIED IN AN ACCIDENT ON WINNEBA - APAM HIGHWAY
A tragic accident occurred at Winneba Junction on the Winneba-Apam highway, resulting in the deaths of four individuals, including three school children and a taxi driver.
The accident involved a Hyundai Jett taxi, with registration number CR: 748-20, heading towards Apam, and a Toyota RAV4, with registration number GN: 5507-18, traveling from Mankessim to Accra.
According to Winneba Fire Commander DO2 Fredrick Adu Poku, the Toyota RAV4 made a wrongful overtaking maneuver, leading to the collision. The taxi driver and three school children seated at the front of the vehicle were trapped and died at the scene.
The children were initially rushed to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in critical condition but unfortunately passed away later.
The taxi was carrying seven school children from Uncle Rich and St Paul's Schools in Winneba. DO2 Adu Poku emphasized the importance of drivers being focused, concentrated, and adhering to road signs to prevent such accidents.¹
In a broader context, the Winneba-Apam highway has witnessed fatal accidents in the past. For instance, in May 2023, a head-on collision between a Yutong commercial bus and a fuel tanker at Gomoa Okyereko claimed 16 lives, with over 20 others injured. Such incidents highlight the need for continued efforts to improve road safety and prevent accidents.
