The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipal Assembly, Hon. Sebastian Obeng, has announced plans to revive the Town Council sanitation initiative as part of a renewed effort to improve environmental cleanliness, promote public health, and reduce flooding across the municipality.
Speaking to the media on the state of sanitation in the municipality, Hon. Obeng said the Assembly is collaborating with the Municipal Environmental Health Department to reintroduce the sanitation policy, which he described as one of the most effective measures used in the past to maintain clean communities.
According to the MCE, the initiative will encourage residents to take greater responsibility for keeping their surroundings clean while strengthening the enforcement of sanitation regulations. He noted that environmental cleanliness is a shared responsibility and called on all residents to actively support the Assembly's campaign.
Hon. Obeng expressed concern over the growing practice of indiscriminate waste disposal, particularly the dumping of refuse into gutters and drains during the rainy season. He explained that such actions block drainage systems, resulting in floods that destroy property, create inconvenience for residents, and increase the risk of disease outbreaks.
He stressed that poor sanitation continues to pose a serious threat to public health, as stagnant water and uncollected waste provide breeding grounds for mosquitoes and other disease-causing organisms. He therefore urged residents to adopt responsible waste disposal practices and participate in community clean-up exercises.
The MCE further assured the public that the Assembly remains committed to implementing sustainable sanitation measures that will create a cleaner, healthier, and more attractive municipality for residents and visitors.
Adding his voice to the campaign, philanthropist Mr. Francis Coffie, popularly known as Jesus Open Doors, called on the public to make cleanliness a daily habit.
Quoting the biblical teaching that "cleanliness is next to godliness," he said maintaining a clean environment reflects discipline and respect for human life. He appealed to residents to take sanitation seriously and avoid practices that endanger public health.
Mr. Coffie also expressed concern about some food vendors who prepare and sell food close to open gutters and other unsanitary locations. He warned that such conditions expose consumers to food contamination and increase the risk of preventable diseases.
He encouraged food vendors to observe proper hygiene standards and urged the public to patronize food prepared under clean and safe conditions.
The renewed sanitation drive is expected to involve intensified public education, community engagement, and closer collaboration between the Assembly, environmental health officers, traditional authorities, and residents to restore cleanliness throughout the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipality.
