The Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipal Veterinary Officer, Dr. Emmanuel Kingsley Bassaw, has raised serious concerns over the increasing number of dog bite cases recorded in the municipality, revealing that the area is witnessing an alarming trend.

Speaking in an interview with Hamza Mohammed, Dr. Bassaw disclosed that the municipality records an average of three dog bite cases every single day, describing the situation as worrying and a major public health threat.

According to him, even communities such as Bibiani Degede have not been spared, as recent reports confirm dog bite incidents in the area.

“I can even say Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai tops the country in terms of dog bite cases,” Dr. Bassaw stated, emphasizing the urgent need for collective action to address the growing problem.

He further revealed that since the beginning of the year, the municipality has already recorded three confirmed cases of rabies — a viral disease that is almost always fatal once symptoms appear. He stressed that rabies remains a serious but preventable disease, largely transmitted through bites from infected dogs.

Dr. Bassaw announced that the Municipal Veterinary Directorate is preparing to embark on a mass dog vaccination exercise across the municipality to curb the spread of rabies and reduce dog bite incidents.

He urged all dog owners to cooperate fully with the exercise, noting that vaccinating dogs is not only a legal requirement but also a civic responsibility to protect families and the wider community.

The Veterinary Officer warned that strict measures would be enforced against dog owners who refuse to vaccinate their dogs. According to him, any dog owner who fails to comply with the vaccination directive risks having their dog seized and destroyed in accordance with public health regulations, in order to prevent further dog bite and rabies cases.

Dr. Bassaw therefore appealed to residents to report stray dogs and suspected rabies cases to the Municipal Veterinary Office promptly. He also advised parents and guardians to educate children on how to avoid provoking dogs and to seek immediate medical attention if bitten.

He reiterated that tackling the issue requires a collective effort from dog owners, community leaders, and residents to ensure that Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai becomes a safer place for everyone.

Public health officials are hopeful that the upcoming vaccination campaign will significantly reduce the number of dog bites and eliminate rabies cases in the municipality.
