The Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipal Branch of the Ghana Blind Union has successfully elected a new team of executives to steer the affairs of the association for the next term.
The elections, which were held in a peaceful and transparent atmosphere, brought together members of the union, officials from the Department of Social Welfare, and other stakeholders who reaffirmed their commitment to promoting the welfare and rights of persons with visual impairment.
The newly elected executives are:
Madam Rita Yeboah – Chairperson
Mr. Coffie – Vice Chairman
Mr. William Boadu – Secretary
Agya Owusu – Treasurer
Mr. Samuel Mensah – Youth Organizer
Mr. Edward Mensah – Public Relations Officer (PRO)
Madam Naomi Ankra – Women Organizer
Addressing the gathering after the elections, the Western North Regional Chairman of the Ghana Blind Union, Mr. Atta Francis, congratulated the newly elected executives and urged them to work together in unity to advance the objectives of the union.
He also appealed to the general public to treat persons living with visual impairment with dignity and respect instead of mocking or discriminating against them.
According to him, visual impairment does not define a person's ability or potential, stressing that many blind people possess exceptional talents and skills that even some sighted people do not have.
He therefore encouraged society to embrace persons with disabilities as equal members of the community and support them to achieve their full potential.
Also speaking at the event, the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipal Social Welfare Officer, Mr. Ellis Mensah, advised parents who have children with disabilities not to hide them at home due to stigma.
He explained that the government has several intervention programmes and social protection policies designed to support persons with disabilities, adding that such children can only benefit when they are identified and allowed to participate in society.
Mr. Ellis Mensah further encouraged parents to enroll their children in school and seek assistance from the Social Welfare Department whenever necessary.
On behalf of the newly elected executives, the Chairperson, Madam Rita Yeboah, expressed profound appreciation to the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipal Department of Social Welfare for its continuous support and encouragement to members of the Ghana Blind Union.
She said the department's guidance and advocacy have inspired many visually impaired persons to pursue education, acquire vocational skills, and establish their own businesses despite the challenges they face.
Madam Rita Yeboah appealed to the public not to underestimate or discriminate against persons living with visual impairment, emphasizing that they are equally valuable members of society with the ability to contribute meaningfully to national development.
She further noted that not every visually impaired person was born blind, explaining that some people lost their sight through illness or accidents.
"Blindness can happen to anyone at any stage of life," she said, urging the public to show compassion, understanding, and equal opportunities to persons living with visual impairment.
She assured members that the newly elected executives would work tirelessly to promote the welfare of the union, advocate for the rights of visually impaired persons, and collaborate with stakeholders to improve their living conditions across the municipality.
