BAB Constituency: Former MP Expresses Discontent with NPP's Top-Down Election Approach

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has faced significant backlash following its announcement of a top-down strategy for the party's internal polls.

A stalwart of the party and former Member of Parliament for the Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai constituency, as well as former Western North Regional Minister, Hon. Kingsley Aboagye Gyedu, has expressed dissatisfaction with the party's top-down approach to its internal elections.

Speaking on Okyeame Radio's Adekyee Mu Nsem morning show, hosted by Kaakyire, Gyedu voiced his disagreement with the leadership's method, although he acknowledged his inability to change it.

"Personally, I don't agree with them, but the decision has been made, and it is binding on me as a member of the party, so we are all moving forward with it," he said.

According to Gyedu, the National Council, which made the decision, could choose to reverse it and start the primaries from the polling stations. He cited a 2019 precedent that the NPP could have followed to avoid criticism of the new approach. "Why can't we do the same this time?" he queried, maintaining that this could easily be done.

On the other hand, Gyedu acknowledged that while the NPP has many capable leaders among the vying presidential candidates, Kennedy Agyapong stands out.

He believes Agyapong is the only candidate who can create jobs for approximately sixty percent of the youth voters. He referenced a researcher, Musa Dankwah, who claimed that the NPP could have won the 2024 elections if Agyapong had been their flagbearer.

Gyedu argued that it is unfair to enter another election with a candidate who has previously failed simply because of their regional affiliation. He dismissed the notion that a particular candidate has been adequately marketed, stating, "It doesn't make sense; it doesn't hold water."

He emphasized that now is the time for Agyapong to lead, urging the party to give him the flag to secure power.
