A heartbreaking tragedy has struck the community of Degede, a suburb of Bibiani in the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipality of the Western North Region, following the drowning of an eight-year-old boy in a fish pond.

The deceased, identified as Kwabena Kesse, was a Class Three pupil described by neighbours as lively, friendly, and full of promise. His sudden death has thrown the entire community into a state of shock and mourning.

According to reports, Kwabena had gone out with a group of friends to a nearby fish pond, where they intended to swim and play. What began as a normal childhood activity quickly turned tragic when one of the children allegedly pushed him into the water.

Narrating the painful incident, the boy’s grandmother, Vivian Amankwaa, said she was at home when one of the children rushed to her in fear to report that her grandson had been pushed into the pond. She explained that she had just returned from the hospital and was still unwell when she received the distressing news.

Despite her condition, she immediately raised an alarm and called on neighbours for help, hoping her grandson could be rescued in time.

Residents in the area responded swiftly to her cries and rushed to the scene in an attempt to save the young boy. Some of them entered the pond and managed to pull him out after an intense search. Unfortunately, upon retrieval, Kwabena was found unresponsive.

Efforts by community members to revive him proved futile, as he had already stopped breathing. The devastating outcome left many at the scene in tears, as the reality of the situation sank in.

The incident was subsequently reported to the Bibiani Police. Officers arrived promptly, secured the scene, and conveyed the body to the morgue for preservation and further examination. Police have since launched investigations to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident, including the alleged involvement of the playmate.

The incident has sparked conversations within the community about child safety and supervision, particularly around water bodies. Many residents expressed concern over the increasing number of children who visit such ponds unsupervised, calling on parents and guardians to be more vigilant.

Some community members also appealed to local authorities to consider fencing off open water bodies or putting safety measures in place to prevent future tragedies.

The death of Kwabena Kesse serves as a painful reminder of how quickly playful moments can turn into irreversible loss. His passing has left a deep void in the hearts of his family, classmates, and the entire Degede community, who continue to mourn the loss of a young life gone too soon.
