W/N/R : Embrace culture of tree planting–Deputy CEO Forestry Commission
The Deputy Chief Executive of the Forestry Commission of Ghana, Madam Martha Kwayie Manu, has encouraged indigents to perceive tree planting as their way of life.
The Deputy CEO, who was on a visit to the Western North Region as part of the Green Ghana Day, noted that residents should go beyond the government’s initiative and embrace the culture of tree planting to save their region.
She said “if we look around us, especially we those in the Western North Region we will realize that the seasons we usually plant our crops have shifted a bit And all of this is as a result of [the fact that], we are losing our forest cover to desertification.
“And I don’t think we are happy with these changes. So, let us wake up, let us see the initiative as a stepping stone and a weapon to fighting this canker called desertification,” she said.
Ghanaians all over the country are expected to plant 10 million tree seedlings throughout the sixteen regions of Ghana on the theme “Greening Today for Greener Tomorrow.”
She commended the Bibiani District Forest Services Division for exceeding its targets for the past two years.
According to her, the fight against climate change requires the involvement of everyone, which includes government and the private sector who have a role to play in acquiring a greener environment.
Therefore, she encourages people not only to plant the seedlings but also to nurture them to grow.
Mr Kobina Adu Baiden, the Bibiani District forest services division, assured residents that his outfit has enough seedlings for planting.
He added that interested persons or organizations can go to Sefwi Anhwiaso, Bekwai, Chirano or come to their main office Bibiani for a variety of tree species for free.
