The Western North Regional Command of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has organized an inter-market fire safety quiz competition for market women in Sefwi Dwinase and Sefwi Asawinso to promote fire prevention awareness among traders.

The initiative, held today, forms part of the Service’s efforts to educate market women on fire safety practices and reduce the frequent outbreak of market fires within the region.

Speaking at the event, the Western North Regional Commander of the GNFS, Philip Kudzo Amagnoh, explained that the quiz competition was designed to increase awareness of fire prevention and equip traders with the knowledge needed to respond effectively to fire emergencies.

He noted that similar competitions have been organized in other parts of the country, including Sekondi-Takoradi, Sunyani, and Tamale, where participating markets received fire extinguishers and other prizes for demonstrating knowledge in fire safety practices.

The Ghana National Fire Service emphasized that preventing fire outbreaks is a shared responsibility and encouraged traders to take fire safety education seriously, particularly during the dry season when fire incidents are more common.

Participants in the competition expressed appreciation to the Fire Service for the initiative, describing it as an important learning opportunity that has enhanced their understanding of fire safety measures.

Some of the market women also raised concerns about inadequate fire safety facilities in their markets and called for more regular training and improved infrastructure to help prevent fire disasters.

They were particularly grateful for the fire extinguishers awarded to participating teams, noting that the equipment would help them respond quickly in case of emergencies. The traders further commended the Ghana National Fire Service for its continued efforts to promote fire safety awareness among market communities.
