The Minister for the Interior and Member of Parliament for the Asawase Constituency, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has addressed public concerns and misconceptions circulating on social media regarding the ongoing recruitment into Ghana’s security services.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, the Minister explained that the recruitment process began in December as part of efforts to ensure transparency and fairness in how applicants apply to the country’s security agencies.
According to him, by the time the application deadline closed, a total of 506,608 applicants—representing over half a million Ghanaians—had applied for recruitment into various security services.
Hon. Muntaka further revealed that the Ministry has introduced several measures to strengthen the screening process for applicants seeking to join agencies such as the Ghana Police Service, Ghana National Fire Service, Ghana Immigration Service, Ghana Prisons Service, and the Ghana Armed Forces.
He disclosed that under the current recruitment exercise, 15,000 personnel have been recruited as Police Assistants to support the Ghana Police Service. In addition, 5,000 recruits have been engaged to assist firefighters in markets under the Ghana National Fire Service, while another 5,000 recruits have been enlisted to support officers of the Ghana Prisons Service.
According to the Minister, this brings the total number of recruits under the current initiative to 25,000 personnel.
He explained that the programme is designed to provide recruits with practical experience while supporting the work of the various security agencies. It will also allow the Ministry to assess the recruits’ character, behaviour, strengths, and weaknesses during the period of service.
Hon. Muntaka further assured young people that the government is committed to creating more employment opportunities within the security sector. However, he emphasized that a single recruitment exercise cannot fully address the country’s unemployment challenges.
