Sir Coke Welcomes Supreme Court Ruling on 'One Member, One Vote' in Political Party Elections

Aspiring Communications Officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Constituency, Mr. Charles Obeng, popularly known as Sir Coke, has welcomed the Supreme Court's landmark ruling directing political parties to allow all registered members in good standing to participate in the election of party executives and parliamentary candidates.

The Supreme Court, in a 5–2 majority decision, ruled that every registered member in good standing of a political party must be given the opportunity to vote in the selection of the party's leaders and candidates. The judgment effectively brings an end to the long-standing delegate system used by Ghana's major political parties and ushers in a "One Member, One Vote" system for internal party elections.

Reacting to the ruling, Sir Coke described the decision as a significant victory for democracy, inclusiveness, and grassroots participation. According to him, the judgment strengthens the democratic principles upon which political parties are built by ensuring that every loyal party member has an equal voice in determining the leadership and future direction of the party.

He stated that empowering all card-bearing members to vote would deepen internal democracy, enhance transparency, and promote fairness in the selection of party executives and parliamentary candidates. He believes the new system will encourage greater participation from the grassroots, foster unity within political parties, and improve accountability among aspiring leaders.

Sir Coke further urged members of the NDC to embrace the ruling in good faith and continue working together to build a stronger, more united party capable of achieving victory in future elections.

He expressed confidence that the "One Member, One Vote" system would strengthen the bond between party leaders and the grassroots, ensuring that leadership truly reflects the will of the majority of members.
