The first batch of beneficiaries under the government’s flagship National Apprenticeship Programme in the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipality has officially received tools and equipment to kick-start their vocational training, marking a significant step in the fight against youth unemployment.

The distribution ceremony, held at the Municipal Assembly Hall, saw dozens of young apprentices receive essential working tools, including hairdressing equipment, sewing machines, and knitting machines to support their practical skills development.

Commitment to Long-Term Human Capital Development

Speaking at the event, the Western North Regional Coordinator of the National Youth Authority (NYA), Mr. Jesse Yaw Auido, emphasized that the initiative goes beyond immediate job creation.

According to him, the distribution of tools represents a long-term investment in Ghana’s human capital and demonstrates the government’s genuine commitment to addressing youth unemployment through sustainable skills development.

“This programme is not just about giving out machines. It is about equipping young people with lifelong skills that will enable them to become self-reliant and contribute meaningfully to national development,” he stated.

Mr. Auido described the occasion as a major milestone in the collective effort to empower Ghana’s youth, strengthen human capital, and build a resilient local economy. He stressed that the programme’s success will depend on collaboration among government institutions, master craft persons, communities, and private sector partners.

He also highlighted the importance of a thorough validation process to eliminate ghost names and ensure transparency and accountability before stipends are paid.

Government’s Renewed Focus on Skills Development

The Western North Regional Director of the National Youth Authority, Mr. Alhassan Mohammad Adam, reiterated that His Excellency the President remains deeply committed to youth development, which informed the introduction of the National Apprenticeship Programme as a flagship intervention.

He underscored the critical role of skills training in reducing unemployment and empowering young people to build sustainable careers.

Mr. Adam further revealed that outstanding trainees who meet the required standards may have the opportunity to transition into the government’s work-abroad programme, opening doors to international exposure and employment opportunities.

He cautioned beneficiaries against selling the tools provided to them, stressing that the equipment is intended to support their vocational training and long-term careers. He also reminded participants that the validation exercise remains a prerequisite before stipends are disbursed.

Local Leadership Backs the Initiative

On his part, the Municipal Chief Executive for Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai, Hon. Sebastian Obeng, noted that the programme represents more than the distribution of equipment.

“This is a deliberate investment in the future of our young people. It is about transforming talent, dedication, and hard work into sustainable livelihoods,” he stated.

He echoed the warning against selling the machines and tools, urging beneficiaries to use them strictly for their intended purpose to maximize the opportunity presented to them.

Appeal to Master Craft Persons

The Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipal Youth Employment Agency Director,Hon. Adam Smith, appealed to master craft persons to treat the apprentices like their own children and ensure they receive proper training and mentorship.

He noted that the government has fulfilled its promise to create pathways for youth employment and called on all stakeholders to play their roles effectively to guarantee the programme’s success.

Representing the master craft persons, Master Christopher Adu Kofi, CEO of Abubrokosua Fashion and Design Center, expressed gratitude to the government for introducing such a transformative initiative. He assured authorities that the masters are committed to training the apprentices diligently to become competent professionals in their respective trades.

Beneficiaries Express Gratitude

Some beneficiaries who spoke at the ceremony expressed excitement and appreciation to the authorities for the opportunity. They pledged to take their training seriously, noting that in recent times many young people complete Senior High School before pursuing vocational skills.

They emphasized that although not everyone follows the traditional academic route, technical and vocational training remains a valuable and respectable pathway to success.

Reducing Youth Unemployment Through Practical Skills

The National Apprenticeship Programme is designed to reduce youth unemployment by providing essential artisanal skills training, promoting entrepreneurship, and fostering economic empowerment through hands-on learning.

With the successful distribution of tools to the first batch in Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai, stakeholders are optimistic that the initiative will significantly contribute to job creation, self-employment, and long-term economic resilience in the municipality and beyond.
