Parents Urged to Ensure Daughters Receive HPV Vaccine to Prevent Cervical Cancer
The Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai Municipal Health Directorate has officially launched its HPV vaccination campaign, marking a significant step in Ghana’s fight against cervical cancer—one of the leading causes of death among women in the country.
Mr. Oheneba Oppong-Darko, the Municipal Health Director, described the initiative as a “historic breakthrough in women’s health” and a crucial component of the Free Primary Health Care strategy, which emphasizes disease prevention and equitable access to essential healthcare services.
He explained that the campaign targets girls aged 9 to 14 years, with the goal of vaccinating 12 Thousand accros the municipality against the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), the primary cause of cervical cancer. He encouraged parents and guardians to ensure their daughters participate, stressing that early vaccination is key to lifelong protection.
“We urge all parents to support this initiative. The HPV vaccine is safe, effective, and a powerful tool to protect our young girls from future risk of cervical cancer,” Dr. Oppong stated.
Representing the Municipal Education Directorate, Mr. Abdul Sharif Kwaku Duah, Public Relations Officer, commended the strong collaboration between the Ghana Health Service and the Ministry of Education. He expressed confidence that the partnership will ensure maximum participation, especially among schoolchildren.
“With health and education working hand-in-hand, we are confident this campaign will yield positive results and safeguard the future of our young girls,” he said.
The HPV vaccination campaign forms part of Ghana’s broader commitment to eliminating cervical cancer and improving women’s health across the nation. Parents and communities are being urged to fully support the nationwide rollout.
