GAFET Launched to Transform Agricultural Education, Create Opportunities for Ghanaian Youth

The Government of Ghana, through the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, has officially launched the Ghana Agriculture Fund for Education and Transformation (GAFET), a major initiative aimed at strengthening agricultural education and developing the human capital required to transform Ghana’s agriculture sector.

The initiative seeks to mobilise resources to support institutions responsible for training agricultural professionals, including agricultural colleges, universities, technical institutions, research centres and other relevant training institutions.

GAFET is expected to play a significant role in bridging the gap between agricultural education and the practical skills required to drive modern agriculture, promote innovation, improve productivity and create sustainable employment opportunities for the youth.

The Fund has received seed funding from five founding partners whose commitment is expected to provide an important foundation for the implementation of the initiative.

The five founding partners are:

Agrisolve

GrowForMe

Newage

Tradeline Consult

Farmerline

Their contribution demonstrates the importance of public-private collaboration in developing Ghana's agricultural education system and building the skilled workforce needed to transform the sector.

Speaking at the launch, the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Hon. Eric Opoku, stressed that Ghana's agricultural transformation would depend largely on the quality of human capital available to drive the sector.

He explained that agricultural education must be treated as a national priority rather than an issue that concerns government alone. According to him, the development of competent agricultural professionals, researchers, entrepreneurs and technical experts is essential to achieving sustainable growth in the sector.

The Minister also indicated that GAFET is intended to create a platform through which individuals, corporate organisations, private-sector players and other stakeholders can contribute to the development of agricultural education.

He noted that agriculture presents enormous opportunities for job creation, entrepreneurship, food security and economic development, particularly for Ghana's growing youth population.

The initiative is therefore expected to support the acquisition of modern agricultural skills, research, innovation, technology and practical training, while encouraging more young people to consider agriculture as a viable career and business opportunity.

Government has further appealed to other institutions, businesses, development partners and individuals to support GAFET and help expand its financial base to enable the Fund to achieve its long-term objectives.

The launch of GAFET marks an important step towards building a stronger connection between education, agriculture, innovation and employment, with the ultimate goal of producing a skilled workforce capable of driving Ghana's agricultural transformation.

The five founding partners—Agrisolve, GrowForMe, Newage, Tradeline Consult and Farmerline—have consequently set an important precedent for private-sector participation in agricultural education and national development.

With sustained support from government and stakeholders, GAFET is expected to become a key mechanism for investing in Ghana's agricultural human capital and preparing the next generation to lead the transformation of the country's agriculture sector.
