The food sovereignty Ghana, Peasant farmers Association Ghana, a press conference today kicked against changed (GM) products across different sectors, such as food, feed, and industrial applications, within the country.

Mr Bismarck Owusu Nortey, Executive Director of Peasant farmers Association of Ghana, expressed a firm rejection of the decision and vowed to prevent changed products from entering the Ghanaian market.

“We Ghanaians do not accept the decision and will not allow GM products to penetrate through our markets.

The Ghana National Biosafety Authority (NBA) has granted approval for the commercialisation of 14 developed changed products, comprising eight maize and six soybean varieties. This approval from the NBA encompasses the utilisation of these GM products across multiple sectors, including food, feed, and industrial applications.

He said the associations don’t trust government and primary concern revolves around the long-term effects of GM products on both human health and the environment.

They argued that GM foods haven’t established their safety, expressing fears of unforeseen consequences on biodiversity and ecosystems.

Mr Edwin Kweku Andoh Baffour, the Communications Director of Food sovereignty Ghana expressed his disappointment with deciding the regulators and key stakeholders of Ghana’s participation in biotechnology, to approve the release of no less than 14 GMOs into our environment and food system. 

He said the decision will lead to grave and irreversible consequences on our collective health, environment and agricultural systems.
