Blindness Is Not Inability – Bibiani Ghana Blind Union Chairperson Calls for an End to Discrimination
The newly elected Chairperson of the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipal Branch of the Ghana Blind Union, Madam Rita Yeboah, has expressed profound appreciation to the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipal Social Welfare Department for its unwavering support and commitment to the welfare of persons with visual impairment.
Speaking on behalf of the newly elected executives after their successful election, Madam Yeboah commended the department for its continuous guidance, counselling, and empowerment programmes, which she said have transformed the lives of many visually impaired persons in the municipality.
According to her, the consistent support from the Social Welfare Department has enabled many members of the union to pursue and complete their education, acquire vocational and entrepreneurial skills, and establish their own businesses, thereby becoming self-reliant and contributing meaningfully to national development.
She noted that these achievements demonstrate that with the right support and opportunities, persons with visual impairment can excel in various fields and live independent, productive lives.
Madam Rita Yeboah also appealed to the general public to reject the long-held misconception that blind people are incapable of achieving success. She stressed that visual impairment does not define a person's ability, talent, intelligence, or potential.
She urged society to treat persons with disabilities with dignity, respect, and equal opportunities, emphasizing that discrimination and negative stereotypes only create unnecessary barriers to their progress.
"Blindness is not inability," she stressed, adding that many visually impaired persons continue to excel in education, business, public service, music, sports, and other professions, proving that disability should never be a barrier to success.
Madam Yeboah pledged that the newly elected executives would work tirelessly to promote the welfare of members, strengthen unity within the union, advocate for the rights of visually impaired persons, and collaborate with stakeholders to improve their socio-economic well-being in the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipality.
