Extension of Free SHS to Private Schools: An Excellent Move - Educationist
Hon. Alhaji Mohammed Haroon Cambodia, a former MP, renowned educationist, and Islamic scholar, has praised the government's decision to extend the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy to private schools. In an interview with Bibianinews.com AkuapemHann, he described the move as excellent.
According to Hon. Haroon, the previous administration's "no cut-off point" policy led to many private senior high schools being abandoned. He explained that since the inception of the Free SHS policy, students with poor grades have been admitted to senior high schools, resulting in private schools losing students.
Hon. Haroon believes that the government's decision to include private schools in the Free SHS policy is a wise one. He noted that the Ghana Education Service (GES) will provide qualified teachers to the selected private schools, and these schools will also benefit from monetary allocations to senior high schools.
Although the government has not clarified the cut-off point, Hon. Haroon sees the inclusion of private schools in the Free SHS policy as a strategy to phase out the double track system, which has disrupted academic performance in schools. He believes that with private schools on board, the double track system can be easily eliminated.
