Bibiani Zongo Muslim Women Donate GH¢10,000 Worth of Food and Toiletries to Kumasi Central Prison

KUMASI, Ghana – In a remarkable act of compassion and humanitarian service, the Muslim Women Association of Bibiani Zongo has donated food items and toiletries worth GH¢10,000 to inmates of the Kumasi Central Prison.

The donation formed part of the association's commitment to supporting vulnerable members of society and promoting the Islamic values of kindness, generosity, and compassion. The items presented included bags of rice, cooking oil, soap, detergents, toiletries, and other essential supplies aimed at improving the welfare of inmates.

During the visit, members of the association were taken on a guided tour of the correctional facility, where they visited key sections including the prison kitchen, clinic, accommodation blocks, and other operational units. The tour gave the delegation firsthand insight into the living conditions of inmates and the daily challenges faced by prison authorities.

Speaking in an interview with Adomba Adwoa Agyapong, the leader of the delegation, Ustaz Umar Abdullah Doha, explained that the donation was inspired by the teachings of Islam, which encourage Muslims to extend love, mercy, and support to the less privileged throughout the year.

He emphasized that charitable giving should not be limited to the holy month of Ramadan or the Eid celebrations but should become a continuous way of life for every Muslim.

Ustaz Umar Abdullah Doha also urged Ghanaians to reconsider the common perception that everyone behind bars is a hardened criminal. According to him, interactions with several inmates revealed that some had found themselves in prison due to weak evidence, mistaken identity, or the inability to secure proper legal representation.

He suggested that a significant number of inmates may be innocent or deserving of a second chance and called for greater public empathy and support for prison reform initiatives.

Receiving the donation on behalf of the Kumasi Central Prison, Corporal Emmanuel Boateng Agyemfra of the Prison's Public Relations Unit expressed profound appreciation to the Bibiani Zongo Muslim Women Association for their timely intervention.

He disclosed that the current government allocation of GH¢5.00 per inmate per day for feeding remains grossly inadequate in the face of the increasing prison population and the rising cost of food and other essential commodities.

Corporal Agyemfra appealed to philanthropists, corporate organizations, religious bodies, non-governmental organizations, and individuals to emulate the generous gesture of the Bibiani group by supporting correctional facilities across the country.

He further encouraged citizens to uphold the laws of Ghana and live responsibly to avoid actions that could lead to imprisonment.

The visit ended with prayers for the inmates, prison officers, and the nation, as members of the association reaffirmed their commitment to continuing humanitarian outreach to vulnerable communities.
